Many devotees from different places who were impressed with, the power of blessing and distinguished structure of “Mankombilamma”, came and prayed at the ‘Moolasthanam’ (the place where deity is present) and as per their desire, “Amma” went to their places and that places becomes Mankombu Temples. Also many Vellalars adored the deity at their on homes and done the ceremonial rituals and later that becomes small temples.
The image and Sankalpa of Mankombilamma
There are so many Mankombu temples in Kerala, but only three places have the perfect structure of Mankombilamma. The Temples at Allappuzha Kotta Bhagom Mankombu and Anthinadu have the structure in wood and Poonjar Panachippara has the structure in perfect shape sculptured in stone as per the old Tamilian style. Also in many of the Vellala homes, the structure has been sculptured at the wooden door of their prayer room
The idol in stone has got eight hands, a crown with seven snakes and an elephant at left eye, a lion at right eye. A chain of pearls and garland of “erikku” flowers are worn by the Amma. The dress worn by Amma which reaches up to the knees is known as ‘Chelladam’. Amma had worn “Chilambu” (A metal ring for the feet/ankles) on the ankles. Out of the eight hands of Amma, six of them have got sickle like sword, spear, snake, skull, square shaped shield, round shield, and two hands are on blessing state (‘Abhayam’ and ‘Varadham’). The face is fearsome and hawk eyed. The teethes can be seen through the lips including two large projected teethes.
As per the history, legends and myths available now it is clear that “Mankombilamma” is nobody but SreeParvathyDevi (Wife of Lord Shiva), in the shape of the destroyer of Mahishasuran-the demon king with the face of a Buffalo (Mahishasuramardhini). The ‘Devaprashnam’ conducted at the SreeMoolasthanam in 2006 also confirmed that Mankombilamma is SreeParvathy itself. This special image which is very popular in Tamilnadu and was approved by the great “Thanthrasasthra” (the book dealt with the deities, the worships, mantras and the ceremonies) is a coalition of ‘Durga’ and ‘BhadraKalee’ (Two states of SreeParvathydevi.) Mankombilamma is also worshipped as Shivakudumbini (wife of Lord Shiva), Shivamahalakshmi (Coalition of SreeParvathy and SreeLakshmy, wife of Lord Vishnu), Bhuvaneswary (Lord of this world) and as Mahishasuramardhini (the destroyer of Mahishasuran). That is why Mankombilamma’s prayer includes Uma (Sreeparvathy) and Rema (Lakshmi). This type of image is also detailed in the books ‘Mahakalasamhitha’ and ‘Puraschariyarnavam’.
Like the other Devi temples of Vellala here also the terrific God ‘VatukaBhairavan’, the guard and son of Devi and comrades, snakes are worshipped. |
